Larry: The Most Famous Feline in England

It has been a long tradition in the most important building in Downing Street, office of UK prime minister, called as The Number Ten to have a cat officer. On 14 February 2011 it was reported that a new Downing Street feline staff member had, after all, been appointed. It was Larry, a stray from the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, who had been selected from a shortlist but with David Cameron’s two eldest children having the final say on which they liked best.

Larry, the most famous feline in England

According to Downing Street, Larry has “a high chase-drive and hunting instinct”, a spokesman said Larry had also shown “a very strong predatory drive” and enjoyed playing toy mice”.

Larry curls up with some knitted mice, presents from members of the public who knitted them for Battersea Dogs and Cats home.

In a statement Mr Cameron, the UK Prime minister said, that he is delighted to welcome Larry to his new home. “He came highly recommend to me by Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, who did a fantastic job looking after him. I am sure he will be a great addition to Downing Street and will charms our many visitors.”

The prime minister also gave an update on Larry’s performance 4 months after Larry recruited. The have been no rats to speak of in Larry’s quarry, but he has managed to catch some mice, Cameron said -god news for Larry’s credentials as official mouser after a poor start that saw him fail to make any kills.

In November 2011 Larry’s position came under pressure since the emerged of news that he was spending more time sleeping, and spending time in the company of a female cat, Maisie, than actually hunting for mice. The prime minister’s spokesman rejected calls for Larry’s resignation, stating that “Larry brings a lot of pleasure to a lot of people”.

On 15 February 2012 a party was held in Larry’s honor to celebrate his first year in the office of Chief Mouser.  His press officer defended Larry’s arguably poor performance in his first year by reminding public that as well as being a Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office, “Larry spends his days greeting guests to the house, inspecting security defenses, and testing antique furniture for napping quality”.

Larry personality is full of surprise. Although he was known as not very keen on men. He made an exception in May when he was happy to be strokes by US President Barack Obama.

David Cameron revealed that Larry was “a bit nervous” around most men, but had “liked Obama”.

Larry also celebrate the royal wedding on 28 April, 2012 when he use a natty bow in British colors around his neck.

What I love from Larry is the fact that his figure has attract public attention to adopt cats. 15% increasing of adoption rate recorded in Battersea.

  3. Wonderful effect on the adoption rate of shelter cats! Hooray! I think Larry is a must for #10 Downing Street. And his endorsement of our POTUS is definitely a plus as Mr. Obama runs for re-election! Animals and small children never endorse anyone but the best people!
